Meet the Artist

Gerda Kenyon has always had a love for all things creative. Her artistic journey began in 1970 when she launched the highly successful Indaba Curios brand. She traveled extensively across Africa and the East, purchasing art and supporting local talent and artisans. Over the next 27 years, Gerda expanded her business to include seven chain stores under the Indaba Curios brand, which also encompassed Indaba Interiors and Tamarind lifestyle brands.

After selling her business, Gerda turned her focus to developing her own artistic talents. She started with clay, progressed to marble, and eventually included fine art and oil painting in her repertoire. Her works have been commissioned worldwide, both for her sculptures and fine art pieces. In addition to her artistic creations, Gerda has also taught sculpture workshops, sharing her expertise with others.

Annually, Gerda travels from Cape Town to Pietrasanta, Italy, a region renowned for its Carrara marble, known to the Romans as Luna marble. This type of white or blue-grey marble, popular for sculpture and building decor, has been quarried since Roman times in the mountains at the northernmost tip of modern-day Tuscany, Italy. Pietrasanta is also home to studios of some of the world's most renowned sculptors. Gerda has been visiting Pietrasanta for over 27 years, continuously perfecting her craft in this inspiring environment.

Gerda is also musically talented and has performed extensively, including on the radio. She has also used her musical talents to teach music. Despite her numerous achievements, Gerda's greatest pride is her family. She is a mother of four children, a grandmother of eight, and a great-grandmother of two.
